Ok. So I was geeky enough to watch Back To The Future 2 on “Back To The Future Day” with the rest of the nerds. In case you missed the avalanche of news stories and social media posts, yesterday was October 21, 2015 – the day that Marty and Doc go forward to the future to rescue Marty’s future son from ruining his life with one bad decision.
It was fun to see the 80’s nostalgia which is very heavy in the movie and also to see how they viewed the future. What did they get right? What did they get wrong?
I remember the self-lacing shoes, and the hoverboards, and flying cars. But I did not remember one key line in the movie that hit me like a ton of bricks.
Doc tells Marty his future son commits a crime and is then convicted and sentenced in a matter of 2 hours. Marty wonders how that could happen that fast, and Doc tells him “The Justice System works swiftly in the future now that they’ve abolished all lawyers.”
Sheesh! First, it was Shakespeare (“First thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers”) and now it’s Doc Brown & Marty McFly! It seems everyone in movies or literature wants to kill or abolish lawyers.
Don’t they know how kind and loveable we are?
