Navigating Bankruptcy Procedures: Your Journey to the Courthouse

When you file for bankruptcy you often only have to attend one meeting. If you live in Southern Maryland this means going to the US Trustee’s office in Greenbelt. However if we have to attend a bankruptcy hearing you will be going to the Court House.

For our clients who live in Charles, St. Mary’s, Prince George’s or Calvert County this means a trip to the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland, Greenbelt Division.

The Court House is located at 6500 Cherrywood Lane, Greenbelt, Maryland. The Bankruptcy Court is located on the 3rd floor of the United States District Court District of Maryland Greenbelt Division.

A Step-by-Step Guide to the Courthouse Entrance

To get there you will go around the beltway to exit 23 Kenilworth Avenue, just like you did for the Trustee meeting. Turn right onto Kenilworth. Then turn left at the 3rd light onto Cherrywood Lane. The Court House will be the first building on your right. The Court House sits off the road down a hill. So you may not see it from the road. Therefore you want to look for the guard gate and booth at the entrance to the parking lot.

Usually the gate is up and you can drive right in. As you go enter there is a small parking lot on your right. If that lot is full you can continue around back where there is a parking garage with additional parking.

You will enter the building thru security and a metal detector in a large atrium area. When you get thru security there are elevators and escalators off to the right. The bankruptcy clerks office and the courtrooms on the third floor. Make sure you look at your hearing notice for the name of the Judge and courtroom number before you go so you will know which courtroom you be in. The Courtroom will you usually open about 10 minutes before the hearing so you can go in and check in with the clerk so they know you are there.
