Lawyers can sometimes be a little grinchy this time of year, but this is ridiculous! An attorney for a large Waldorf landlord really did send our client a notice to quit and vacate her apartment on Christmas Day.
Yep. December 25 was the very carefully selected date for our client to move out or else.
One of the great things about representing people in the general public is the outrageous stories you sometimes come across. This lady called us and I literally didn’t believe her. I made her send me a picture of this letter before I agreed to meet her.
I thought it was inconceivable. Apparently, that word does not mean what I think it does.
Oh by the way, she is a single mother federal government employee who didn’t get paid during the shutdown, and she is providing housing for her daughter (another single mom) and her 4 grandchildren – ages 11, 9, 7 & 6 months. One of the kids has Downs syndrome. You can’t make this up. The landlord is aware of the family situation, as they added them to the lease, contrary to Mr. Grinch’s assertion.
See the letter below. I edited it a bit to protect the guilty. Everything in red was added by me. Mr. Grinch might try to sue me. He seems the type. Also, I think I improved it and brought out the real spirit of his anti-seasonal missive. He has certainly earned his place among the all time great Christmas villains.
The heart of the letter – a notice to get out of her apartment at midnight on Christmas Day – is 100% real and unedited. And unfortunately, not inconceivable.
Note: My client gave us permission to post this and use her name if I wanted. I won’t do that here. We sent out press releases and I sincerely hope that one of our local media outlets picks it up. This guy richly deserves all the attention he gets.
