A new law took effect October 1, 2025 that dramatically increases the fines for speed camera violations. The rate scales up depending on how fast you are going. We give you a chart below, and explain the details you have to know about this new law so you know what to watch out for. If you drive, you need to read this, and share it with others.

This new law applies to school zone cameras and other specially placed speed camera locations. We all know speed cameras are in school zones. In Charles County, those are the only locations for speed cameras. You can see all of the locations of speeding cameras in Charles County here.

But in Prince George’s County, they are all over the place. There are a lot more schools in Prince George’s County, for one thing. But the speed cameras can also be located on residential roads where the speed limit is under 35. That describes a lot of roads in Prince George’s that people use for commuting. You can see all of the locations for speeding cameras in Prince George’s County here.

There is a particularly onerous one in the Town of Riverdale, very close to University of Maryland, that I have contributed to multiple times thanks to my college age children.

If you live in Waldorf, and you ever travel up Route 210 (Indian Head Highway) to the beltway, you will have to deal with speed camera enforcement zones. There are at least three as of this writing. I expect more to come.

Yours truly is currently waiting on a Route 210 ticket to arrive in the mail any day now! Drat. I hope it will be on the smaller side.

Prior to the new law, the limit was $40 for any speed camera violation. That kicks in at 12 mph over the limit. And it now rises if you go more than 15 miles over the limit.

Here is the scale:

  • 12-15 mph over the limit = $40
  • 16-19 mph over the limit = $70
  • 20-29 mph over the limit = $120
  • 30-39 mph over the limit = $230
  • 40 mph or more over the limit = $425

Wow! $425!!! To be fair, you have to be going 95 mph on Rte 210 to trigger that, but going 75 mph, which isn’t that hard to do, will get you $120. That is a LOT more than the old $40 fine.

Now we could debate the merits of speeding camera tickets all day long. I once heard a local radio host say speeding tickets were a user tax on the highway system. They don’t seem to really work, because no one slows down once they go by them, but they do raise a LOT of money.

Regardless of what you think, they are a reality and you should be aware of these increased fines and the locations of speed camera tickets on your most frequently traveled routes. See the links above.

One piece of good news: speed limit camera fines are only civil citations. They will not lead to points on your Maryland drivers license. That part of the law hasn’t changed.

Maryland has had speed cameras since 2009. We wrote an earlier blog post explaining them that was very popular. That post is still relevant today. It explains where the law comes from and how you can challenge a speed camera ticket in Maryland.

This new 2025 law is the first ever increase in the amount of the fine for a Maryland speed camera ticket. So maybe you could say we were overdue for a bump up in the cost.

Conclusion & Next Steps

It was never fun to get a speeding ticket in the mail, but now it can be downright painful. So be aware of the location of cameras, and slow down!
