Happy Defenders Day

IMG_20140912_065344_167Why is Dave Gormley wearing that tie?  Well today is Defender’s Day, the anniversary of  the Defense of Baltimore.  During the battle the lawyer Francis Scott Key was on a British ship watching the bombardment.  He had come on board to arrange the release of his client a Southern Maryland doctor  from Upper Marlboro who had been taken prisoner by the British. Dr. William Beanes was taken prisoner after having helped imprison in Upper Marlboro some British soldiers who had plundered some farms near the town after the sacking of Washington DC.
After having watched the bombardment of Fort McHenry Francis Scott Key wrote a poem that would become known as the Star Spangled Banner and eventually become the National Anthem.
