Charles County Speed Cameras Get Three Times the Number of Speeders

According to the Maryland Independent today, the speed cameras in Charles County have tripled the number of tickets they expected when they started the program.  Charles County has three cameras that they rotate among school zones, and plan to add three more cameras this summer.

This is a timely update to our blog post last week about speed cameras, how they work, and how you can contest a speed camera ticket.  Read it over to learn all about speed cameras in Maryland.

The numbers are big for Charles County.  The Commissioners voted to allocate over $186,000 in revenue from the speed camera program to go straight to equipment upgrades needed by the Sheriff’s office.  Some of the equipment being upgraded includes dashboard cameras used during routine traffic stops, so everyone can see what happened if there is a dispute later.  That is undeniably a good use of the money.  Good dashboard cameras just benefit both the police and the citizens.

The Charles County Commissioners, clearly pleased with the extra speed camera revenue, voted to increase the overall speed camera budget from $257,000 to $900,000. They probably can’t wait to get those extra 3 cameras this summer.

No matter what you think of speed cameras, they seem to be here to stay.  I bet they will soon be coming to St. Mary’s County and Calvert County.  There is no way the local politicians can pass up this sort of revenue.
