Here in Southern Maryland, we have a special challenge with School Bus safety. Some of the main routes for School Buses look and feel like they are Interstate Highways. In Charles County and Prince George’s County there are Routes 301 and 5, in St. Mary’s County Routes 5 and 235 and in Calvert County Routes 2 and 4. As personal injury lawyers, we see the terrible consequences of car and bus accidents on these roads. It is important to use extra caution near a School Bus. Especially at the beginning of the school year when the students and commuters are getting used to their new schedules and the extra traffic.
People rushing to get to school or work on time are sometimes making bad decisions which can lead to dangerous situations as cars going at highway speeds fly past students getting on a school bus stopped on the side of the road. Please keep in mind that the bus slowing down on the highway may be getting ready to pick up students. Slow down, watch for kids, and prepare to stop.
See the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office graphic for the rules on stopping for a school bus.
