As we near our Independence Day, it may be time to think about how the law impacts our freedom. I mean in a general and philosophical sense. Laws are designed to constrict our behavior, but in so doing they make us all more free. Before laws, the strong controlled the weak. Because of laws, the mass of the weak reign in and control the strong.
And if you have a system of laws, you are going to have lawyers. Our language is pitifully ill equipped to properly express our thoughts, and therefore everything we write or say is usually open to some sort of interpretation. If you start interpreting a law, you are acting like a lawyer.
Now I am not going to get on my soap box and tell you how lawyers are always defending your freedoms. But some certainly do. And I will say that the system of laws we have in our country makes you free to live your life. You don’t have tyranny. You don’t have to worry about the strong imposing their will on you. The weak are protected in a land with laws.
OK. OK. I know I am over reaching here. We don’t live in a perfect society because of laws. And the strong do still abuse the law when they can. But we do live in a much better and freer society because of laws.
So if you see a lawyer on July 4, give him or her a big hug.
But not too hard! They might sue you.
