The Jury Duty Phone Scam may be making its way to Southern Maryland. In this scam the caller claims to be from the Court and demands that a fine be paid over the phone using a prepaid credit card for failing to report for jury duty. According to the Maryland Judiciary press release the caller will sometimes mention a Judge’s name and even threaten that an arrest warrant will be issued if payment is not made.
While the current complaints are from Howard and Allegany Counties we want to make sure that everyone in Southern Maryland is aware of this scam and knows to just hang up on such a call. To make sure it is a scam and to report the problem call your local Court and report the call to the jury office in La Plata, Leonardtown, Prince Frederick or Upper Marlboro. Since similar scams have been reported in Virginia earlier this year help us spread the word about this scam so it won’t gain traction here in Maryland. For more on this and similar email scams see the Maryland Courts Press Release.
