EZ Pass Scam Alert

Screen Shot 2015-08-26 at 7.17.55 AMThe EZ Pass scam that was reported in the news last week has made it to my Southern Maryland Law in box.  During my morning check of my email I came across what looked like an E-Z Pass notice. My children are old enough to drive, so  I could imagine myself being  ready to click the attachment to try to figure out who got the ticket.  This is exactly the type of emotion that these type of scams play on.  Make sure you think before you click.

There are usually tons of warning signs on these scams if you just take a second to think.  Take a look at the email below.  Why would E-Z Pass send a zip file? Maybe it is the lawyer in me, but how does notice to appear make sense?  What is with the blurb at the bottom in German?  And finally the email address of the sender was @ip78.webonline.at, not exactly a match for E-Z Pass.  What other warning signs do you see? When you see an email like this forward it to the organization impersonated and to the Federal Trade Commission at spam@uce.gov.  Then delete it.  For more information on phishing scams see this comprehensive article Common Phishing Scams and How to Avoid Them or go to the  FTC Consumer Information: Phishing Page.
